LIDL MAY GROW TO 1,400 STORES IN UK

Lidl could eventually have 1,400 stores in the UK as the discounter plans to invest heavily in expansion during the next decade. In an interview with The Grocer, regional director Martin Bailie said: “We have opened 40 or 50 stores a year for the last five years and that’s the rate at which we will continue. We have a good pipeline and the openings for the next two or three years are already secured.”
The expansion programme aims to keep Lidl ahead of Aldi, the other German discounter that is rapidly adding stores in the UK. Aldi has said it plans to open a new store every week. Lidl currently has about 520 stores in Britain, about 100 more than Aldi.
The Lidl executive said that Tesco’s discounter range, which was launched last year, had not hurt its sales. “Tesco’s discounter range has not hurt us. It has raised the profile of discounting, which has aided us.”
He also predicted that the discounter boom was far from over. “I believe our growth rate will continue after the recession. Our customer numbers are still in double-digit growth.”
