CARREFOUR EXPANDS IN TURKEY

While Carrefour is working hard to maintain its market share in Western Europe, the giant retailer has big expansion plans in Turkey. Carrefour intends to open around 100 hypermarkets and supermarkets in the country in 2010, after opening about 60 this year. Carrefour also aims to open another 100 stores under the Hard Discount banner next year, maintaining this year’s rate of openings.
“Turkey is genuinely an emerging market opportunity for Carrefour,” said Christopher Hogbin, Sanford C. Bernstein. Turkish consumer spending is expected to reach an average annual growth rate of 6.7% by 2012, and the grocery goods market would hit a growth rate of 6.2% by 2012.
Turkey also is the host country for PLMA’s next annual Roundtable Conference, which will be held 24-25 February, 2010 in Istanbul. The Roundtable Conference will include a presentation on the Turkish retail market and store visits to leading retailers in the city.
