SHOPPERS REACT QUICKLY TO RECESSION
Consumers across the globe are rapidly changing their shopping behaviour in response to the economic downturn. A Nielsen study found consumers are moving to private label, cutting back on purchases, and reducing their shopping trips. “What has been interesting is the uniformity in behavior across countries,” Nielsen said. “This consistency in their behaviour really goes to this point of these economies being very, very closely tied together.”
The study follows changes in most the world’s largest economies: US, China, India, Germany, France, UK, Spain, Italy, Russia, Brazil, and Canada. Nielsen found that consumers in the US, Germany and Spain were under the most strain. Spain, whose economy has been hit hard by a housing downturn, showed a big increase in the number of consumers quickly cutting back on spending
