BIG GROWTH IN NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES

Non prescription medicine sales are increasing sharply in eastern and central Europe, as consumers increasingly seek cold, flu and digestive remedies. The market grew 26% between 2007 and 2008, with vitamins, minerals and herbals taking a substantial share in the market, according to market researcher, PMR Publications. The most dynamic markets were Slovakia (35% growth), the Czech Republic (24%) and Poland (23%). The researcher estimated the market was worth €9.2bn but predicted growth would slow to 8% in 2009.
PMR said business is being helped by sales outside of pharmacies in channels such as the
internet and supermarkets, where restrictive regulations are being eliminated. For example, Slovakia recently drafted a Medicine Act that could permit the sale of the medicines online.
